Links are the nervous system of SEO. In order to get high search engine rankings and great traffic, you need lots and lots of inbound links. These not only bring traffic directly to your site, but it alerts search engines that yours is a site worth checking out. But all links are not created equal. Links from certain sites are just worth more than others. That’s why when setting up your website with an SEO plan, it’s so important to be incredibly thorough when developing your link neighborhood worksheet, your list of links you plan to target. Without the right link configuration, optimizing your website and individual web pages will be nearly impossible.

There are different types of links out there. You never want to put all your eggs in one basket, so you’ll want a balance of these different types of links. When making your list, consider each of the following types, what you need to get them, and how much they will be worth to you. Here are the links you’ll be working on compiling, in roughly ascending order of value.

ROS Links

ROS, or “Run of Site” links are a situation where you basically buy a spot for a link to your page or pages on someone’s site, like an ad. There may be circumstances where this is to your benefit, but this kind of link buying can often backfire and hurt your rankings, so it’s not recommended you try this without professional help if improving your rankings is critical.

RSS/Blog Links

Start a blog and submit it to various directories. This can help build out your link profile, but the links are generally not very strong.

Comment /Profile Links

An easy one, but also easily abused. Comment on another site and include your link. If you don’t offer a real comment though (as opposed to “Hey I like read your blog.”), you’ll either be blocked as spam or lose credibility with those who visit that site.

Reciprocal Links

Reciprocal links are of course, links between you and another website, where you post their link and they post yours. These should be used sparingly, to pump up your link total, but if the bulk of your links are of this type, you’re going to have a problem. Links of this type should make up 10 percent or less of your total, and they should be with sites that are relevant to your own.

Directory Links

Make a list of the quality directories and consider submitting your site to them. All you have to do is pay to get listed, so this is an easy way to collect a few links. You may need a professional to help you determine which directories are worth paying for, however.

PR Links

Use a press release service to announce your site and include some links. This is another one you might want to get professional help with, as it is those who are experienced who know how to set up the press release for maximum link building value.

Article Bio Links

A great way to get links. Just write articles that include your link and submit them. If you have an SEO deal that includes content, this is an ideal add on to build up your link profile.

.Edu, .Gov

These links tend to be higher quality, at least with regard to how trusted they are. Again, you’ll need some expertise to know which .edu and .gov sites to go after and how to get them.

Traditional Media Links (Newspaper, radio, magazine. etc.)

A little extra effort can help you get some of these links. Get your site written up by a traditional media outlet, and have one more place that your link is out there in the world. You can also place an ad containing your link in a traditional media outlet.

Authority Links

Authority links are just that, links from sites that are an established authority in the area that your website covers. The more of these you can get, the better, but of course, the way these sites gain a reputation for being authorities is by being discriminating about the content on their site and what they link to. Still, you should find the expert sites in your field and put them at the top of your list.

One Way Links

These are always great, if you can get them legitimately. They make your site look more like a trusted resource than part of a link building campaign.

Presell Page Links

These are premium links to pages of marketing content. You’ll have trouble getting these on your own. You’ll want your SEO professional to help you, but it’ll be well worth it: These links are highly prized.

As you can see, developing a link building list can be a bit complicated and time consuming. You need to know all the link sources out there, but you can’t pile them all into your website, so you need to know which of each type it is worth it for you to try to get. For this reason, if you really want to optimize your website, you will want to hire a company who has the experience, the software and the knowhow to develop an optimal link neighborhood list, filled with link opportunities that, when realized, can shoot your PageRank into the stratosphere. Without such assistance, you may be flying blind, which can be costly, time-wasting, and may not even yield any satisfactory results.
