Market yourself like Swine Flu

Posted by Craig | 01.05.09

Who wants to be associated with Swine Flu? Swine Flu is bad, right? Well, yes, Swine Flu is bad, but the coverage it’s getting is phenomenal. The Swine Flu story is spreading throughout the nation faster than Swine Flu itself. People are buying face masks, avoiding confined spaces, and thinking about keeping their kids out of school.

The Secret of Swine Flu

Here’s the big secret: This strain of Swine Flu isn’t even as big a health concern as the regular influenza we see every flu season. It’s estimated that 36,000 Americans die from seasonal flu every year. So far Swine flu has killed one. Can you imagine if people on the Internet believed that the product you were promoting was 36,000 times more potent than it really is?

Where SEO Fits In

That’s what good SEO does. It takes a product or service and creates the tools it needs to blow up. When properly marketed, any idea can catch on like wildfire, and with the global nature of the Internet, what was one of a crowd yesterday could be the thing everyone from Alaska to Zimbabwe is talking about tomorrow (and yes, they do have the Internet in Zimbabwe).

SEO Flu

Keep that in mind when trying to generate traffic through SEO. You can’t control whether your good or service will be successful in the long term, that depends on the quality of the product. What you can do is create an environment where everyone wants to find out. You want to make your marketing strategy viral. Just like the “dreaded” Swine Flu.
