Scoring Goals with SEO

Posted by Craig | 24.04.09

The hockey playoffs are upon us, which means it’s time to ask: What does playoff hockey have to do with SEO? At first glance, the answer may seem to be: “Nothing. Hockey is a sport played on ice and SEO is a way to get web traffic.” But upon more careful consideration, there are some similarities.

Hockey Teams and Websites Are All Competing for the Same Prize

In hockey, it’s the Stanley Cup. In SEO, it’s web traffic. There are only so many people out there interested in the service or product you have to offer, and if your traffic is going to another site that offers it, they are probably not going to yours. That’s why just the way the Rangers, Mighty Ducks, Flyers and the rest are all scrambling to get to the top of the NHL pile, good websites are always scrambling to get themselves to the top of the search engine page rankings.

Hockey and SEO Deal with Niche Markets

NHL hockey only appeals to a limited segment of the population. Large segments of the United States have never even seen real ice on the ground, let alone been tempted to strap on blades and skate across it. That’s why it is so important to market yourself successfully. The NHL has to find a way to get its product, and information about its product, to the people who will respond to it, and SEO is about just that as well, getting information about what your website can provide directly to the people who need it.

The Hockey and SEO Landscape is Constantly Changing

The Colorado Avalanche may win the Stanley Cup one year and not even make the playoffs the next. Things move fast in the NHL and they move fast in SEO too. New techniques, new ideas and new tools are constantly being developed and a successful website is always ready to roll with the punches and handle the changes. If you make SEO a top priority of your company, you can be hoisting your own optimization Stanley Cup at the end of the year.
