The All-Star game has come and gone, and once again, the American League has emerged victorious. The National League hasn’t won since 1996, but you can bet that won’t stop them from coming out swinging next year. The excitement of the All-Star game brings the question to mind: What does it take to be an SEO All-Star? Let’s look at the qualities that good baseball players and good SEO marketers share.
Talent
Let’s face it, if you don’t have the talent, you’re not going to make it to the all-star game no matter how hard you work. But you don’t have to be the most talented player in the game to make it if you do work hard. Think of talent and hard work like a glass that you are trying to fill. The glass comes filled with however much talent you have, and you’ve got to pour in hard work to get it the rest of the way to the top. In the SEO world, talent can mean a lot of things; it can be getting the best people to design your site, getting the most gifted writers to create the content, and even getting the best products or services to sell. There are plenty ways to add value and talent to your SEO campaigns.
Persistence
Some players are in the league ten years or more before they make their first All-Star game. These players kept at it, and realized that their times would come. This doesn’t mean sit back on your laurels and hope for the best: If something isn’t working, you have to change it. But it does mean that no one who gives up ever succeeds.
Creativity
Good baseball players are always reinventing themselves. Once a batter has a pitcher figured out, that pitcher has to figure out new ways to pitch that batter or the hitter will feast on him. Conversely, if a pitcher knows that a player always responds to certain pitch sequences the same way, that player is a lot easier to beat. A good SEO strategy is always in flux; it’s about seeing what’s working and what isn’t and anticipating what will and won’t work down the line, adjusting accordingly.
