Optimizing images for web pages is an important process, but there's more to it than just making sure the images look good in the browser window. You can harness images as powerful tools for
search engine optimization; and if you're not utilizing valuable SEO techniques when creating and coding your image files, you are missing a prime opportunity to get some more attention from browser spiders.
How you title your images plays a large part in the image's SEO value, but using a relevant title is not the only extent of optimization. To optimize your image for search engines fully, you should utilize all image tags with relevant keywords and information.
Within the image, you can also define the "ALT" tag (which is an image description that appears while the image is loading or disabled), the "TITLE" tag (which defines a title that appears in front of the image as the mouse rolls over it), and the "LONGDESC" tag (references another file in which a longer description of the image is published).
When using "ALT" tags, it's important not to include too many words within the quotation marks. Browser spiders may ignore an excessive amount of "ALT" keywords. Also, browsers like Google have found ways to combat this and treat such strategies as 'spamming their bots'.
Outside of titles and tags, folders also play a role in the optimization of images. Folder titles are analyzed alongside image titles and making sure the two have related names is another key to optimization.
When you keep these few things in mind, your images will help in your
SEO website design efforts.
