Social media profile pages can send some nice “link juice” to the page linked to from the profile, especially if the profile is active and filled out with a good deal of information or whatever the site allows people to modify in their account (bookmarks, uploaded media, etc) You can also upload images, which can be effective in branding, as these social profile pages, for some reason, tend to rank fairly well for the brand name in most cases.
Creating Content
The more information you include in your brand’s social profiles, the more keywords are present, increasing the ranking and legitimacy of profile pages. While you don’t want to “spamdex” (index multiple links in a spamming manner) every page on your site inside your social profile, a few clear links to strong entry points of your site and maybe a few articles are a great idea to include.
However, you need to be aware that using the same text in each of your profiles, like using the same “about us” paragraph over and over, creates duplicate content online, not only providing little value for the profile you write this duplicate content on, but also potentially decreasing the ranking of the original content.
Social Bookmarking for SEO
For social bookmarking sites, the case is a bit different. The links in these sites used to do very well but the potential for SEO was recognized and people started spamming these sites with links. As a result, a lot of Social Bookmarking sites became NoFollow, meaning that the site is basically telling search engines that the hyperlink should not affect the link target’s ranking. However, the links still work and can drive traffic to the website, so they have some use in branding and traffic, just not in increasing your rankings.
